What Is God Like?

Is He fun to Know?

Let's look at some creatures He made then at what the Bible says. Looking at what He made gives us clues as to what He is like. Each lesson will start with creatures then look at what the Bible says. We plan to include a video clip of each creature and a Scripture song with each lesson.

There are more than 3,500 kinds of frogs. The largest is the size of a man's arm, and the smallest is the size of a baby's finger nail. These are baby poison arrow frogs.

The hairy frog does not have hairs really. They are long projections of skin used like gills in helping him to breath under water. He really looks strange!
Frogs come equipped with a large variety of eye shapes and colors. The slit shapes help with night vision. The heart shaped one is found on the fire bellied toad. There are even eyes painted on the back of a frog which kind of looks like a snake eating a frog.
You can find a frog created with every color of the rainbow. The brightest colors of frogs are found in the tropics.
Each frog has been given feet just right for the kind of activity he likes to do. If he swims or glides in the air, he has web feet. If he climbs, he has little suction cups on finger tips. If he digs, he has special shovel equipment. If he looks like sea weed most of the time in a pond, then his feet are shaped to look like sea weed. God designed each one just with exactly the tools they need to do their work.
Frogs have many different ways of parenting. Some carry their young on their backs or in hip pockets or in a pouch like the kangaroo. The most amazing is the Darwin frog. He swallows his young and they grow inside his throat till old enough to live on their own. Then he burps them out.
The calls of the frogs show us that the Creator has a real sense of humor.

The variety of shapes also describe the humor of the Creator. The frog with a crown and red eyes has a comical look. The alligator frog is so different from the rest. The Casque headed tree frog has such a armored look. Then there is the budget frog. He looks like a blob. Though God never runs out of money, this one looks like the budget ran out and this frog just looks like a blimp.

We found a huge giggling toad during a mission trip into the jungles of Mexico in the state of Chiapas.

What is God like?

From the frogs we can see he has humor. Now let's look at the Bible and look for more clues about Him.

In Psalms 46:10 It says, "Be still and know that I am God."

Bible writers use descriptions of things we know, in order to help us understand what God is like.

How do people describe you? Has any one ever said you were like sunshine?

Maybe someone has said you are like a pig when you make a mess.

Do people describe you as being like a stubborn donkey? Donkeys do a lot of work but sometimes they refuse to do what they are told.
Maybe you have described your hunger like this: "I am hungry as a bear". In Russia, they say, " I am hungry as a wolf."

Bible writers used the same kinds of ways to try to describe God. We all have different experiences so we do not understand things the same. What is God like?

He is like an eagle. He tenderly loves and carries us when we are in trouble. Like the Bible says in Deut. 32:11,12 "As an eagle stirs up her nest, flutters over her young, spreads abroad her wings, takes them, and bears them on her wings; so the Lord alone did lead us, and there's no strange God with us."

God cares for the elderly God promised to carry us even in old age. Isaiah 46:4 "And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar (gray) hairs will I carry and will deliver you."
Song as an eagle Deut. 32:11,12

God is like a ROCK

He is unchangeable like the rock. He is always there as a shelter like a cave.

2 Samuel 22:2 "The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer.

David sang these words to God the day he hid in a cave and
David was saved from his enemy Saul who was a jealous king. David had done nothing wrong. He trusted God to hide him.
 God is like a judge

God is very just. He knows every secret. He sees everything.

Psalms 68:5 He is a "father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows"

Ecclesiastes 3:17 God shall judge the righteous and the wicked.

God is the judge. Ps. 75:7

 God is like a light.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, an a light unto my path...Ps. 119:105

God's words are sweet as honey. They are from His heart. All Scripture is helpful to us in different ways.

"How sweet are thy words unto my taste, yea, sweeter than honey..." Ps 119: 103

Psalms 19:9 "...the judgments of the LORD [are] true [and] righteous altogether.
19:10 More to be desired [are they] than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb."

God is like one who makes a garden
He cares for each plant. We are like the plants.
Jesus said, "I am the vine, and my Father is the husbandman." John 15:1

You are the branches. (vs. 5) If you are broken off, you become like a dry old stick and never can grow grapes or leaves.

God is like a potter:

We are the clay. We watched them make pottery in Mexico. The lump of clay in the hands of the potter turns into a nice vessel which can hold water or other things. God shapes us into something useful.

"But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you our potter; and we all are the work of Your hand." Isaiah 64:8

God made everything. "Thou art worthy...for you have created all things, and for Your pleasure they are and were created." Rev. 4:11

God is like a Shepherd He feeds and cares for wounds and protects.

Psalm 23 "The Lord is my Shepherd..."

God is like a refuge (song)

The refuge is a place where animals can be safe from people who want to shoot them.

When we are in trouble, all we need to do is cry out to God for help. We may be running, walking, working, or kneeling and He promises to hear even if there is a choir program going on in His heaven home. He will hear the weakest cry for help. If you are sick or in danger, just call out to Him. He is a refuge and a hiding place (Psalms 32:7)

God is Like a Father

Jesus' favorite way to describe God was by calling Him Father or Dad. Father's keep loving you just because you belong to them.

He loves no matter how you act. All Fathers are happier when you bring them joy and honor.
Mathew 5:45"... He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."
The parable about the son that ran away is what Jesus told to describe God. The father waited and watching for his son, then he ran to meet his ragged stinky boy and covered him with good clothes to hide his shame. (Luke  ) God is just as eager for you. Tell Him now that you want to learn more about His loving heart. There is a whole web site that I have dedicated to showing pictures of what God is like from all 66 books of the Bible.

Lesson 2 covers what God did when sin arose in the heart of Lucifer, His created angel. If you have wondered what the Bible says about the angels look in lesson 2 and 2B.
