Cave Rescue

Missionary Boys were given permission and an escort to explore a recommended cave while Mom was setting up clinic and meetings

In the mountain village of Porvenier in southern Mexico, my children wanted an activity to do while mom was getting things set up for clinics and evening meetings.  It was a Sunday morning and someone had recommended a visit to the cave near by. It sounded like something they would need a guide for. Some boys volunteered to show our boys the caves. I studied the faces of my friends to see if they thought it was a safe idea. They all acted like it would be fine. I gave permission if they had flashlights and stayed together and had a good guide. I requested that my daughter stay home with me for she was out numbered by all boys. They excitedly prepared their drinking bottles of water, flashlights and jackets and off they went while I prepared for meeting. My daughter loves adventure and wished she could go along. It seemed like it could be too dangerous for my little girl.
Suddenly I was impressed to pray for my boys. It was such a strong impression, I dropped everything and again asked God for their protection. A while later I saw these mud caked children who sounded like mine but had little resemblance to the clean boys who had left a few hours before. Their shoes were covered inside and out with a sticky clay like mud. They had a horror story to tell. Just as soon as they entered the cave, their flashlights gave out.  When one of them tried to shake off mud from their shoes, a piece of mud became airborne and hit their new Spanish friends. Since they spoke different languages, they could not explain and they were peppered with mud balls. The path in the cave was very narrow, one little light worked, and the slippery mud path had to be crawled on to keep from sliding into deep pits in the cave. One section demanded use of a rope to get across. The Spanish boys held the rope and before one of my sons was ready, the rope was jerked. He found himself slamming into rocks and his grip on the rope was not good. He feared he would fall to his death on the rocks far below. They knew it was a long ways down, for they had dropped rocks and heard it took much time before impact. This must have been the time I was urged to pray. He was relieved to get back and clean up. All of the boys were not too sure they ever wanted to visit the cave again. I could see the wisdom to their decision.
Thank God for His protection. He answered my prayer and also had impressed me to pray. I love how actively involved He is in my care for my children. He loves them even more than I. I waited 13 years and prayed desperately for God to give me children. They are learning so many things during these trips all over the world. Each experience is God designed to bring the rough spots out of all of us. God is faithful to keep that which we have committed to Him. He promised that.

2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

The children are very helpful in meetings and clinics. They are training to be leaders in God's work.  But sometimes in their teen minds, they do things that really keep their angels busy. They are so dear and precious to me. I think they have more opportunities for their faith to grow than they would have in a lifetime of staying at home. (November, 2000)

Psalm 91:9 Because thou hast made the LORD, [which is] my refuge, [even] the most High, thy habitation;
91:10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
91:11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
91:12
They shall bear thee up in [their] hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
