Getting through the border into Mexico was a terrible event
for me. I was delayed 3 hours. My four little children did not take kindly
to sitting in the sun baked, loaded car down the street from customs. I
feared they could get kidnapped but they insisted on guarding the car. I
expected a fifteen minute event. Tears finally came and then heavy sobs as
I struggled through customs. I could not understand their unkindness to
me. It was one thing after another. Then the car papers disappeared. I had
an extra set in the car and so that did not stop me. They demanded bond
money of 300 or 400 dollars. I resisted their demands and finally gave it
to them. The delay set me off the target of which town we could stay
overnight in. It was just getting dark as I was passing a slow vehicle. I
hit a hole in the pavement and popped a tire. |
| I could not complete the pass. An oncoming car was headed for me and the car I was passing slowed to help me get around. My car was zigzagging with the bad tire and I was screaming out my prayer to God for help. The children were wide eyed and hanging on tight. There were no shoulders on this road. A little ditch was on each side of the road. I had no option but to park on the road in the dark. |
| I wondered if there were any snakes on the ground as I ordered my children out quick to the far bank. If I got hit, they would live. When cars were out of sight, they came back to the trunk for unloading to get to the spare at the bottom of a huge pile of mission tools, Bibles, and lessons. I told them as soon as we were all ready, God would send a strong helper to change the tire. I do not have strength to get the bolts off. I know how to change a tire but have no strength sufficient for the task. |
| As soon as I got the car unloaded I saw big truck headlights and heard the big engine approaching. I chill of fear rushed through me. Would this driver top that hill and crunch me? If he stopped would he kill me? I tried to relax in faith that Jesus would care for me. In the dark in a foreign country with four children helpless on the road, I was a normal mother with fear chills. When the trucker stopped and came to me, I was so nervous I forgot my Spanish and I said something very stupid. "I do not speak English". He smiled as though he did not know a word I said. He walked around to the tire and reached for the tools. His strong arms had the tire off in seconds. The little spare tire was on in no time and he instructed me in Spanish to drive slow on it. At the next town was a tire store. In the morning, they could |
With
grateful hearts, we all loaded the car in record time and were singing
God's praises as we went to the next town, found a motel, fueled up and
and readied for the next days journey. At that motel, we checked the
engine oil level. We kept checking and rechecking thinking we had goofed.
It was not down two quarts like it had done throughout the whole trip. God
had healed that oil leak at some point between the border and that motel.
He never said anything, just did it silently without ever being asked to
do it! |

next morning the tire store had a different size and had to sell me two
new tires. Across the street was the man who could put them on to the rims
for me. I put one on top the car in case I hit another pothole wrong. They had
new ones on in a short time and we were on our way to
destination, about a thousand miles on south. |
God
had told us to take this 4 wheel drive jeep Eagle and during the trip we
began to understand HIS wisdom. We had flooded Mexico states to drive
through. We went past Mexico City, south to the very tip within 5 miles of
Guatemala. There were places the road was gone and we used a cow pasture
and floating wood raft bridges. There were land slides covering the road
with a tiny path through. The height off the ground made this car better
at crossing all the speed bumps in every tiny village.
God helped throughout the whole trip. |
| Here is a great quote that I have thought about when I
give to Jesus. If I have any doubts, I must never talk about them.
9-11. Let Nothing Mar Your Sacrifice.--Watch as faithfully as did Abraham lest the ravens or any birds of prey alight upon your sacrifice and offering to God. Every thought of doubt should be so guarded that it will not see the light of day by utterance. Light always flees from words which honor the powers of darkness (Letter 7, 1892). {1BC 1093.3} |
| In teaching us to ask every day for what we need--both temporal and spiritual blessings--God has a purpose to accomplish for our good. He would have us realize our dependence upon His constant care, for He is seeking to draw us into communion with Himself. In this communion with Christ, through prayer and the study of the great and precious truths of His Word, we shall as hungry souls be fed; as those that thirst, we shall be refreshed at the fountain of life (Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 112, 113). |
