Welcom to larom.org. This section of Bible studies looks at Bible pictures of God's character. It is amazing how this study helps you see what a loving God we have. He was willing to take risks to win our love and admiration. He is honored by our love and faithfulness even during poverty and sickness.  He treasures His children and hears every cry for help. This is a shortened simplified version of my adult web site on the same theme: illustratedbible.net

What picture does Genesis show us about God?

God is powerful, the most intelligent, there's no limit to His resources and love

 In the beginning of this world, God spoke and complex creatures and plants and stars and planets all came into existence. His power and resources have no limit. He just spoke all the material into existence. He did not have to start over. Everything worked correctly on His first try. He looked at everything as He completed it and was satisfied. He did not feel like it was not good enough. He was satisfied it was very good.

You see, God is perfect. His plans did not need to be changed or improved on. His genius mind is far above any human. It is amazing that He set aside an appointment time  on the seventh day  so He could enjoy the companionship of people on this earth. Why does He care about us?  He is so much smarter than we are.

The perfect man and wife God made had robes of light to wear. They had the most beautiful garden to live in. Every thing they could possibly want to eat was growing on the trees. They were taught the importance of obedience. A tree of fruit that was not poisonous was assigned as a tree they were not to eat from. It was a test and an opportunity for them to have the choice to obey and live forever or to disobey and die. They made the choice to disobey. Eve was tricked by the flying snake that the fallen angel Satan was speaking through. Like a ventriloquist Satan made it seem the snake was talking. This tricked Eve and she took fruit to Adam. He knew she had disobeyed God. He had a difficult time choosing for it seemed he would have to part with his wife. He ate the fruit. He seemed to think God could not create another wife for him. His sin was greater than that of Eve. He not only failed to trust God, he had openly chose to suffer the same punishment as Eve.

God showed tender compassion like a parent when He provided animal skins for clothing for Adam and Eve after the sinned and could not have their clothing of light anymore. (Gen. 3:21)
God showed His love when He could have wanted revenge for the way Adam and Eve hurt Him when they disobeyed. He could have removed flowers, color, fragrances, and made the curse much heavier. He also could have wiped out His creation and started over.
The same infinite power of God which created Eve could have supplied her place. Adam's sin was even greater for he reasoned that perhaps God would take Eve from him and he would rather join her in her fate.
When Adam and Eve sinned, God in mercy prevented these two people from eating from the tree of life. He placed an angel to guard the tree and a flaming sword around the tree of life to prevent any eating of this fruit until the relationship had been repaired and a remedy made for sin.
God had patience and firmness as He worked with the sin problem. He could have ended the life of the murders Cain and his grandson Lamech and others who followed their example.
When God did destroy the world with a flood He showed that He is just and will bring every sin to judgment.
God is master of the laws of physics. He controls the laws. God designed a law of physics that He stated was to be used as a symbol of hope every time there was moisture in the air. The rainbow showed a promise and pledge that whenever God looks on it He will remember His promises to every creature on this earth. Genesis 9:16 God has covenanted to save any one who believes, loves and obeys Him. Every time God and the angels look on this rainbow they think about us.

This same symbol is mentioned in Ezekiel about God's throne and in Revelation 10:1 about the head of Jesus. When Jesus comes the second time, He will be encircled by a rainbow. This valuable symbol had many counterfeit meanings but this Bible one is God's meaning for creating this law of physics.

Children of Noah sinned and again God brought justice  mixed with mercy as He reprogrammed people to speak different languages. Mercy was seen in that most languages use the word momma, mom, madre, or a variation close enough that the mothers could still recognize this from their children. Those who understood each other's language moved away to live together. Finally this helped them obey the command to populate the earth instead of living all together. (Genesis11:7-9)
God cares about families. He did not give up on the dysfunctional family of Jacob. When Rachael was loved more than sister Leah because of the scheme of the father to cheat Jacob, God had a remedy. God blessed the hated wife with children. She felt more valuable because she had children. In mercy He allowed Rachael not to see the wild hate and cruelty of the sons of her sister on her own son Joseph. Rachael died during the birth of her second son.
God is gracious. When Abraham lied about his wife, Isaac lied about his wife, and  Jacob lied about being Esau, God taught them it was a mistake but God helped them out when trouble came to them. This showed God forgave and never left them to what they deserved. That is grace.

God Blessed Jacob's  with a Genetic Engineering Dream

God has a Remedy for every problem

Gen. 31:10  l conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle [were] ringstreaked, speckled, and grisled.
31:11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, [saying], Jacob: And I said, Here [am] I.
31:12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle [are] ringstreaked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.

I am fascinated by Jacob's working knowledge of how to make spotted sheep after the dream God gave him. There is even a sheep called Jacob's sheep. It has 4 horns. In Genesis, Jacob tells how he used something sheep love to nibble on (poplar branches) to keep the strong of Laban's flock at the watering troughs so they could have time to breed. Based on an agreement with his father-in-law who had changed his wages 10 times, he gathered spotted animals and brown to be in his  own flocks.

  Then later, Jacob says that he would have been empty handed if God had not blessed him because Laban had cheated him so many times. God saw how Jacob had stayed up nights and days caring for sickly and feeble sheep. He saw him shield Laban's sheep from robbers.

Of all creatures the sheep is one of the most timid and helpless, and in the East the shepherd's care for his flock is untiring and incessant.  DA 478

As an earthly shepherd knows his sheep, so does the divine Shepherd know His flock that are scattered throughout the world. "Ye My flock, the flock of My pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord God." Jesus says, "I have called thee by thy name; thou art Mine." "I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands." Ezek. 34:31; Isa. 43:1; 49:16. {DA 479.2}
Jesus knows us individually, ... He knows the very house in which we live, the name of each occupant. He has at times given directions to His servants to go to a certain street in a certain city, to such a house, to find one of His sheep. {DA 479.3}
Every soul is as fully known to Jesus as if he were the only one for whom the Saviour died. The distress of every one touches His heart.

God is a Mighty Protector

God puts restraining orders on those wild with rage against His people.

When Laban chased after his son-in-law Jacob, and  Esau planned to kill Jacob, God appeared and told both Laban and Esau not to harm Jacob.

God put a restraining order on the people of Shechem so that they had a fear of Jacob's family. Jacob was afraid they would chase Him and kill his whole family in revenge for the cruelty of his sons Levi and Simeon. (Genesis 35:5)

God Comforts with Dreams

Jacob's son Joseph was despised because He was godly. God comforted Joseph before the worst crisis in his life by giving him dreams. Joseph was hated because of his dreams and because he faithfully reproved those who sinned in his family. God allowed the violence of his brothers to go into wild rage as they tormented him and finally sold him as a slave. The dreams helped Joseph remain true to God for many years till God was ready to put his family back together.

Summary:

God is creative with an imagination far beyond the human ability. He is satisfied with His work. His 7th day Sabbath appointment shows the value He places on us.

God is just. He's full of mercy, grace, patience, and compassion. He is a protector, and comforter. He sent dreams to help solve family disputes, provide for Jacobs flocks,  and comfort Joseph ahead of his own disaster.

Six thousand years have passed since the earth was created. Sin has caused disease and suffering and death. Yet soon this will all change.

The earth is 6,000 years old and Jesus promised the next thousand years will be spent in heaven and from there eternity will provide a forever youthful life with Jesus. There will be no sorrow or sadness, suffering, pain or crime there. Prepare to meet Him, my dear friend. He is full of grace, mercy, compassion and love.

Those who keep the law that describes the character of this powerful KING OF THE UNIVERSE, will be showing they are loyal.
