God's Carriage

This story happened over 150 years ago, when traveling was difficult. There were no jets, or cars back then. Ellen and her husband gave all they had to God's work. They did not have enough money to buy a horse and a carriage. Every day they worked for God without money. James worked now and then in the fields but the pay was just enough for food and clothes. He spent what he could to get the Bible truths out in little booklets and magazines.

The trip to Sutton, Vermont, was finished up by taking a  stagecoach for forty miles. It was such a bumpy ride that it was very painful to Ellen. Her husband whispered words of courage and every ten miles, while the horses were being changed, she would slip into a hotel for a few minutes and lie down. Ellen longed for her dear children. One child was in Maine and the other in New York. She often cried at night for her children. Ellen began to feel so discouraged. One lady made a comment that really hurt Ellen. She had said to her a few days before that it must be very pleasant to be riding through the country without anything to trouble her. The woman felt that it was just such a life as she should love to have. That ladies words hurt for Ellen had given up comforts to share the gospel. She was so tired. When she went to sleep an angel came and encouraged her saying she had given God two precious flowers. God was pleased with her children. That helped her feel better.

One night there at Sutton, Vermont,  a very special dream given to Ellen White. She was visited by an angel who told her a secret. There was a surprise planned for her in the morning. The church in Vermont had noticed how tired she was traveling in trains, steam boats, and whatever she could find to come and share with them. They passed the hat around and collected 175 dollars to provide a horse and carriage for Ellen and her husband James. The angel told her that she would be seeing many horses to pick from. Some looked real good but would not work out very well for her for they were nervous and could tip her carriage over.
The first was a high-spirited, rather nervous sorrel, and the angel said, "No."

 "Not that one" was the reply to the second, a large gray horse.

Then, as a beautiful dapple chestnut, somewhat swaybacked, was led before them, the angel said,

The angel said, "That is the one for you."

The next day as people surprised her with their present to her, she quickly selected her horse. It was nice that she did not hurt any generous man's heart because the angel told her which one to pick. I love how God works!

Charlie weighed about 1,400 pounds and held his head so high that the end of his nose was as high as Willie's head, so he had difficulty trying to harness the horse.  But that was years later when her little Willie helped her harness this faithful horse, Charlie. Although described as kind and intelligent, Charlie hated the trains that occasionally passed on the Baltimore and Ohio tracks less than a mile away. {5BIO 324.7}
His name was Charlie, and he lightened their journey to Canada and through a period of many years. On one trip alone he took them one hundred miles in two days. He was faithful just as the angel said. God had made the horse, He had planned years in advance that this animal would serve his daughter Ellen and his son James White.

I shared this story because I believe God has picked out my transportation too. He still cares about these things. We have experienced His special help every time we ask for advice instead of just picking out the car that goes the fastest, looks the nicest, or makes others jealous.

God's Cars

Just finishing college and having paid it all off in 1978, my husband and I wanted to borrow and purchase a car that we really liked. We wanted one that got good gas mileage and looked good. We had our eyes on a certain car and were trying to get approved for borrowing. We prayed about it together. Finally we had done the right step. God knows the future. He knows which car will last the longest.

God answered our prayers in a way which surprised us. Just a few minutes before we left our home to go after the purchase of this car, the phone rang. Dad Vern said his neighbor had this car deal that was too good to pass up. The owner had not liked the color. It was hardly used. It was a Datsun honeybee. The amount they wanted for it was what we had saved up for a down payment on a new car. We jumped in the car and drove the 6 hours to mom and dad's place and bought the car.

This car worked out to be very good for us. We drove it thousands of miles. We had more schooling ahead of us and God knew payments on a car would have been too heavy a burden. We drove it to Loma Linda California and used it there then from there to Kansas City to Medical school. While in Kansas City we drove this car for five more years on all our rotations. The floor rusted out and we could see the pavement under our feet through holes. It kept serving till Ron graduated. It did not have a heater those last couple years. My dear sis made a snow suit for my baby that was so warm he was sweating when it was below zero weather in that car. We had a twenty five mile drive to his baby sitters home and he was very warm.

We celebrated the day that God provided wheels for our work. This red Pontiac was obtained from Dad Dave and served as transportation till it had a window broken out by a wild teenager while Ron was working at the hospital. His Bible bag was all that was stolen. We hope he was blessed by it. Over 210 thousand miles were on the car and it still works.

The Lincoln was purchased Dec. 5, 1995 without any money down. This was our first experience with Dad Dave. He said God told him that he would never have any problem with us. He asked me to promise to tell him every time I was going on another mission trip. He wanted to be like the olive growers who provided for missionaries. I admired this man who prayed over every car in his lot. God answered that prayer for us a few days later.

 He had a repair shop and had a few rentals and second hand cars on the side. I had promised him that by the fifteenth of the month we could come buy the car but he said we could have it right then and pay him later. I was so surprised. I was so careful in driving it. There is a story about this car under the title "Out of Control".

God had Dad Dave bring this car to us and have us drive it long before we could come up with funds to pay him for it. He said since it was an '85' AMC Eagle, we could not expect to find parts easily but it had a strong engine made to last if kept well. He said the only problem it had was an oil leak.

We asked God what He wanted and discovered this was the car to drive to Mexico to do mission work. We immediately packed and were on our way. We had 10,000 miles of challenges.  This story is recorded under the title "Healed Car". There were so many helpful men that God asked to help us. One changed a tire on a lonely road after dark in Mexico. Mechanics offered to make sure all was greased, and ready for our return home. Many came to the meetings to listen because God had healed my car.

When an angry trucker in Mexico forced me off the road on a dangerous section of road with no shoulder and a deep ravine for us to tumble into, God held up the car till the truck was past. We continued on but I could not figure out how.

God delivered me at each check point. I heard them saying since I had little children along, it explained all the bags. All they saw was a harmless mother with children. They never dug through any of my bags. I was so grateful for God's protection and avoidance of delay. I had Bibles along that might have caused them distress.

The next special surprise was this Ford. God provide this one when we were very discouraged. Ron had just lost his job, we had gone through bankruptcy and things looked hopeless. It was more comfortable than any car we have ever had. Dad Dave again had faith that eventually we could come up with the funds. God used him to provide wheels  and encouragement for the work He had lined up for me. God used dad Dave to lift us enough to keep going.  The car has the same design and engine as is in police cars.  God had many long distance appointments for me and the way was prepared for my comfort in the journey. The best of it all is God picked it. Since I know so little about cars, I trust God to provide the engine that will work for the places He is going to send me. This car engine now has over 168,000 miles.  If I had selected the car for the Mexico trip and chose this one, I never would have cleared the speed bumps in every little village. I never could have managed the detours made by flooding. The four wheel EAGLE was exactly what I needed.

Since God can see the road ahead of me, I trust HIM to select the equipment for getting there. I am learning to trust more and more to HIS management. He always provides for our needs. Here are some of my favorite promises that God can provide all that we need to do His work.

END--- Below you can find many special promises. God's promises are for us to believe, ask, and claim as though they were promised directly to each of us.

Phil. 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Luke 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
12:34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
12:35 Let your loins be girded about, and [your] lights burning;

Trust in Him continually, and doubt not His love. He knows all our weakness and that which we need. He will give us grace sufficient for our day. {AG 117.2} Amazing Grace  by Ellen white

When you have the assurance that he hears you, you will be cheerful in tribulation; you will rise above despondency, because you experience the quickening influence of the power of God in your hearts. {GCB, May 18, 1909 par. 6}

You are to believe that Jesus knows just what you need, and will supply all your wants; so you can go on in faith, saying "I have laid my burden upon the Lord, and I will not lay it upon any human being. God will hear and answer my prayers." Satan may say, "You do not feel any better, you are just as miserable as ever." But tell him you believe that God will do just as he said, and rest your whole weight on his promise. {RH, May 19, 1891 par. 11}

God has made it our duty to pray. The riches of the universe belong to Him. He has all temporal and spiritual treasures at His command, and can supply every want from His abundant fulness. We receive our breath from Him; every temporal blessing that we enjoy is His gift. We are dependent upon Him not only for temporal blessings, but for grace and strength to keep us from falling under the power of temptation. We daily need the Bread of Life to give us spiritual strength and vigour, just as much as we need food to sustain our physical strength and give us firm muscles. {BEcho, September 24, 1894 par. 2}  by Ellen White

He who has given his life to God in ministry to His children is linked with Him who has all the resources of the universe at His command. By the golden chain of the immutable promises his life is bound up with the life of God. The Lord will not fail him in the hour of suffering and need. "My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:19). And in the hour of final need the merciful shall find refuge in the mercy of the compassionate Saviour and by Him shall be received into everlasting habitations. {HP 238.6}

God knows our wants, and has provided for them. The Lord has a treasure house of supplies for His children, and can give them what they need under all circumstances. Then why do we not trust Him? He has made precious promises to His children on condition of faithful obedience to His precepts. There is not a burden but He can remove, no darkness but He can dispel, no weakness but He can change to power, no fears but He can calm, no worthy aspiration but He can guide and justify. {TMK 224.3} That I May Know Him
