HORNS & Antlers

There are many creatures that carry at least one and maybe many horns.

Have you ever wondered what they are for?

The horn of the rhinoceros has no bone. It is a bundle of keratin which forms structure like a hoof. In oriental cultures, the horn is ground into powder and believed to have medicinal powers. There are five different species of rhino. The rhino uses his horn as a weapon. They are very heavy, strong animals.  In the Bible in Numbers 23:22 Balaam tried to curse Israel but ended up blessing them. He referred to God's strength to be like the unicorn (King James Version) which was another name for the rhinoceros. See Revised Version.

Horns can even be used to dig in the soil. Mostly it seems they are used in combat.
The Jacksonian chameleon had a cluster of horns on his head that he uses in battle when needed.
The Bible speaks about the horn being used for many different things. This is a shofar. Horns are a symbol of strength or political power. (Psalms 132:17: Jeremiah 48:25)

In prophecy, horns stand for kings, kingdoms, or other powers. (Daniel 7:8, 20, 21 and 24; Revelation 17:12, 16)

This amazing goat has a set of 4 horns. He uses them often to get his way. Horns have held oil for uses like anointing (Psalms 23) Horns are hollow.
In the book of Luke, the Bible says that Jesus is like a horn. He has power to save us from sin. Luke 1:69
In the ancient sanctuary, which we will tell you about in lesson 11, there was furniture that had horns on it in its upper corners. This furniture was a symbol of Jesus. The horns on the altar were a symbol that Jesus has power to save all from sin if they choose. (Exodus 30:10) These horns were cleaned off once a year. The blood of the lamb was placed on these horns every day.
Here is more history of horns: In the story of the fall of Jericho, the priests were to blow the trumpets and everyone shout. God had His angels use this signal as the time to push down the walls of Jericho. Joshua 6:5
Surely the Lord will do nothing, but He reveals His secrets to the prophets. Amos 3:7

SONG:Press here for Scripture song.

The future is hidden from our view but God sees it all. When He chooses to, He reveals what is about to happen. In the Bible He showed secrets in the form of symbols. Let us look at some of the secrets of the future.

Lion with wings

Even though Jesus knew everything in the Bible, when He came to this earth, He learned about the Bible just like do by studying. While Jesus was growing up as He lived on this earth, He learned the Bible from His mother Mary. She helped him to learn about the strange animals written about in the book of Daniel.  In Daniel 7, Daniel had a dream about some very strange looking animals. These weird animal figures helped him to know future events. He could see right into the future.

Jesus learned about things to happen clear up to the end of the world. He was happy that God's people would study the Bible for themselves. While He was studying He had to imagine what these animals looked like.

The first animal was a lion coming out of water. It had two wings. While he watched, the wind blew and the lion's wings were torn off.

Wings are a symbol of speed. This lion was a symbol of the country Babylon that Daniel was working in. It was a country that was very powerful. It had speed in winning wars and conquering nations.

This picture was taken in Mexico on a church seen in Tuxtla. The children noticed it because they had studied this prophecy. It had a big statue on the side and then one  up on top.

Babylon is again spoken of in the Bible in Revelation. (Rev 14:8) "Babylon is fallen, she made people drink her wine. ( It was talking of her false teachings.)

BEAR

The second animal in Daniel was a big bear. It was munching on 3 bones that looked like ribs. One side was humped up. This was about the next country that took over Babylon. This country was Medo-Persia. It became a world power. It made wars to be in control of the world.

These animals were symbols, not real animals. God was revealing who the world leaders would be before it happened. Always before big events happen, God tells His secrets to the prophets like Daniel. He promised in Joel 2:28 that He would continue sharing His secrets. Even young people will dream dreams and see visions.

 Leopard

The third animal looked like a big wild cat called a leopard. He looked so strange. This animal had four heads. It is hard to draw an animal with four heads. Will all the heads be doing different things? This animal had four wings. Since wings describe speed, this country of Greece was very fast in conquering.

Dragon

The fourth beast was so awful and terrible looking. Daniel had not seen any animal that it looked like. It was hard to tell about it. It was such a strong mean animal. It had teeth as strong as iron. It could chew up anything without breaking its teeth. Anything it did not eat, it smashed with its feet. It had ten horns sticking out of its head. While Daniel was watching this scary animal, a baby horn started to grow in the middle of the ten big horns. The Bible talks about the horn symbol Daniel 7.  It is a power or kingdom power. The horn of our salvation is Jesus. He has the power to save us. Luke 1:69

This  horn grew to be bigger than the other horns. It needed room so it pushed three horns out by the roots. This horn talked like a man.

In a later lesson we are going to study all the words that this talking horn said.

For now, we are going to say that the talking horn said he wanted to change times and laws and that he was equal to God.
John was a disciple of Jesus who saw this animal in vision. It was another description of the future hiding a big secret. Those who really wish to know Bible can study and find out what it means. How many heads  and horns do you see? There are more crowns than heads. One of the heads was wounded then healed. This power hurt God's people for 42 prophetic months or 1260  years. Notice that there are 10 crowns. This animal or beast had feet of the bear and mouths of the lion. You see, it had part of each of the nations we just mentioned. There has been a collection of the traditions and beliefs and gods that has been kept at the headquarters of one church. The hope was that it would bring more power and faith in that church.
Another animal that John saw described the future. It was the buffalo. It is described as a lamb like beast that came out of the earth meaning a place with few people. If it comes out of the sea that means it came from many people or from a heavily populated location.
The buffalo has two horns a symbol for two secrets of the power of the nation and its prosperity. These two fundamental principles are republicanism and Protestantism. This is what has brought the United States its success. The lamblike horns indicate youth, innocence, and gentleness. This is how the United States began in 1798.
The prophecy said it originally was like a lamb. Then this beast began to speak like the dragon. These explain a change in this power. The lamblike beast will force all both small and great, rich and poor to receive the mark of the beast or they will not be allowed to buy or sell. (Revelation 13:11-14)
There is a symbol of this animal on the five cent piece of the United States. This animal was a symbol of the free country. These buffalo roam freely on wide open plains. American Indians used the skins for clothing and shoes.

The prophecy plainly indicates that the United States will become intolerant and force people to worship other than they choose.

Look at this strange goat and ram contest as seen in Daniel's dream. All these secrets of the future in Daniel's time are mostly history lessons for us now. But the Big point is that God can see the future. God the Holy Spirit reveals the truth. You can believe it for look at all the things that have happened just exactly like God said it would. You can trust that God is in control and will remain in control during the last days on this earth and forever.
