Dead Rabbit
Hurrying
home from a graduate study class I had taken after work, I was
horrified as I rounded a bend in the three lane freeway. It was rush hour
traffic and I suddenly had no engine power. I was in the fastest of three
lanes and the momentum of my speed carried me over to the slower
lane. Kansas City is a dangerous place for a woman out alone in the
evening. My car had quit where there was no available shoulder to pull off
the rush hour rat race. I had little hope for survival. I prayed, jumped
out and tried to push my tiny car about a hundred feet where there was a
little space off the road but it was on an overpass. Below me was another
busy freeway. |
I
was in grave danger. I could be smashed by passing cars. My little car was
no protection and neither was there any protection for me while pushing my
car and trying to steer it off the freeway. I think angels helped me push.
I did not even weigh 100 pounds. I am a very small person for such a task.
The car rolled along where I was pushing and directing it. I saw water
pouring out and steam rising from the hood. |
Soon
I noticed behind me there was a man in his car with emergency lights
flashing on his car. He was risking his life in fast rush hour
traffic for me. He was at the bend in the freeway to warn those behind him
with his flashers. He could have gone around and been safe, yet he was
helping me, a stranger. |
| A car whisked past me in the lane next to the open car door as I pushed the car. It really felt close. It looked like just inches more and he could have killed me. Finally I had the car parked off the road. Then the man driving the slow car behind me pulled over and asked what he could do to help. In dismay I looked at the engine steaming out its distress. He said it looked serious. He wanted to know what I wanted. Did I want him to call someone to come help me. Did I want a ride? He could tell I was afraid. God could too, for He gave me reassurance that it was safe to ride with this man. My options were few. I was cold and hungry. I could not walk for there was no shoulder to walk on. Below me was another freeway about 100 feet down. When I got into his car, he tried to help me get over my fear by saying he gave Bible studies. He refused any pay for taking me to my home. I wondered if this humble kind man could have been an angel. He said his name was Ken Roadlander. Well, he had landed on the road at the right time for me. How thankful I was to be alive and to be helped from my car to safety. |
My
rabbit was dead! The Volkswagen rabbit diesel engine was cracked,
and pistons were ruined. There was no hope for my engine. I faced a 2,000
dollar replacement job. I worked hard as a nurse taking on 5 different private duty jobs besides my regular nurse practitioner job to pay
for a new engine but the car never worked well again. |
| A friend of mine notified me that her father was killed
at the side of the road in California while trying to fix a flat tire. It
happened about the same time as my incident. (1981)
I believe my life was spared for a reason. I have had 20 years of more answers to prayers since that time. It always brings joy to my heart to think how God loves to answer our prayers for help. Sometimes angels help, and sometimes God uses the hands of people. |
