Drifting Away
You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay. - Ps. 40:17.
This story was sent over the email to me.
It was so special, I thought I would pass it on.
A minister for many years, related
to his son an event that took place several years before he was born.
Dad, Mom, and my two older brothers-who were then very
young-would travel by boat along the river to each church that Dad
pastored. One evening as they made the trip back down the river to the
small house in which they were living, the motor on their little boat
broke down.
Dad struggled to fix the motor but could not. The tide had just begun
to go back out, so the boat started drifting farther and farther from
the shore. Soon it was nighttime and rain began to fall. My mother took
some large pieces of plastic that they carried with them and covered my
brothers with it. As the night wore on everything seemed hopeless.
Dad gathered the family together and prayed for God to help them. When
they opened their eyes they noticed that a large boat had pulled up beside them. A blinding light shone in their faces.
Almost immediately one of the men from the boat threw my father a line. "Tie the line to
your boat. We'll tow you to the shore."
Within an hour the boat had neared the shore. Dad and Mom knew that God
had answered their prayer.
But here is where the story takes an amazing turn. As Dad's boat got close to the docks, the big boat
disappeared. It simply vanished without a trace.
More than 25 years later my parents still cannot explain what happened
on the river that stormy night. All they can say is "It had to be God."
